Do big brands win with AI shopping agents? We checked 518 searches
We ran 518 shopping searches through the catalog AI agents use and looked at who took
When a shopper asks an AI agent for "a good dog harness" or "a weighted blanket," the agent searches a product catalog and reads the first few results. So who gets those first few spots: the big brands everyone knows, or the small Shopify stores nobody has heard of?
We checked. On November 3, 2026, we ran 518 shopping searches through shop.dev, the catalog AI agents use to search Shopify stores, and recorded the top 25 results of each: 12,916 placements from 3,237 stores.
How we sized the stores
There's no public number for how big a Shopify store is, so we used the closest thing agents can see: the total number of reviews across a store's listings in our results. A store with 10,000+ reviews is almost always an established brand. One with under 100 usually isn't.
| Store size | Stores | Share of stores | #1 spots won | Share of #1 spots |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Big (10,000+ reviews) | 81 | 3% | 205 | 40% |
| Mid (1,000–10,000) | 337 | 10% | 185 | 36% |
| Small (100–1,000) | 754 | 23% | 81 | 16% |
| Tiny (under 100) | 2,065 | 64% | 47 | 9% |
Big stores are 3% of the stores agents see, and they take 40% of the #1 spots. The smallest two groups are 87% of stores and take a quarter of them.
Small stores do better the further down you look. They hold 31% of top-3 spots and 43% of top-10 spots. Agents show a shopper the first few results, so that gap between showing up and coming first is where sales are won or lost.
It's the reviews, not the size
The listings at #1 look a lot like the listings at #20, with one exception.
| Position | Median reviews | Listings with a rating | Have an agent summary | Median description | Median price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| #1 | 620 | 97% | 99% | 476 characters | $59.99 |
| #2–3 | 277 | 91% | 97% | 484 characters | $59.99 |
| #4–10 | 106 | 84% | 95% | 509 characters | $58.00 |
| #11–25 | 35 | 75% | 93% | 545 characters | $57.00 |
The median #1 listing has 620 reviews; the median listing at #11–25 has 35. Almost every #1 listing has a rating at all. Price barely moves, and longer descriptions don't help: the top results are, if anything, a little shorter.
Reviews aren't everything, though. Comparing pairs of listings in the same search's top 10, the one ranked higher had more reviews 66% of the time. A third of the time, the listing with fewer reviews won anyway. Reviews tilt the odds; they don't decide every search.
Small stores that win
Small stores do take #1. A few from our results, each from a store with under 300 reviews across its listings:
- Truely Cereal for "high protein cereal gift": a cocoa protein cereal four-pack with 88 reviews.
- Br'Oats for "protein oatmeal": 84 reviews at ★ 4.8.
- Quiet Mind for "weighted pillow": The Original Weighted Pillow, 224 reviews.
- Camine Dog Gear for "dog gear gift": a two-compartment treat bag with 30 reviews.
- Park & Sun Sports for "volleyball net": a portable net system with 30 five-star reviews.
What they share: a solid rating and real reviews, from stores most shoppers have never heard of.
What this means for a small brand
- Get reviews onto your listings. It's the clearest difference between #1 and #20. If you collect reviews, make sure your reviews app publishes them to your Shopify product data, where agents can read them.
- Name products the way shoppers search. "Weighted Pillow" beats a clever product name for the shopper who asks for a weighted pillow.
- Don't pad your descriptions. Longer isn't better. A clear first sentence that says what it is, who it's for and why it's better does more than five paragraphs.
- Price isn't the lever. The median price at #1 is the same as at #20.
What we can't tell you
This is one day of searches, so treat it as a snapshot, not a law. The searches came from the 40 brands we track, so they lean toward their categories: apparel, beauty, home, coffee, pets and outdoor gear. Store size is measured by reviews, which is also the strongest signal we found, so the two overlap. And this shows what goes with ranking well, not proof of what causes it. We're recording these searches every day, and we'll report what changes when listings change.
